I would specify in the divorce papers that the car will be in "Mr. Smith's name" only, and is no longer the responsibility of "Mrs. Smith". You can take these to whomever holds the loan, or send them to them, requesting the name be removed based on these divorce papers. I did something similar and had no problem as long as I sent the legal and finalized divorce papers. I would think refinancing would be something you’d want to avoid, especially these days.

But if it is regular simple interest, then sure, go to see a credit union they typically have lower rates than others and see if they will refinance.
